At the heart of today's reading lies a profound question that echoes through Jeremiah 17, Matthew 17, 1 Corinthians 1, and Revelation 5: Where are we placing our trust? The scriptures paint a vivid contrast between two paths—one rooted in human strength and wisdom, the other anchored in complete reliance on God. In Jeremiah, we encounter the image of a shrub in the desert versus a tree planted by water, illustrating how trust in ourselves leaves us anxious and reactive, while trust in the Lord produces steady fruitfulness even in drought. This theme continues in Matthew 17, where the disciples' inability to cast out a demon reveals their wavering faith. They had just witnessed the Transfiguration, heard God's voice declaring Jesus as His beloved Son, yet still struggled to exercise the authority given to them. The lesson is clear: our effectiveness in spiritual matters isn't about our capability but about our willingness to lean fully into God's power. Paul reinforces this in 1 Corinthians, reminding us that God intentionally chooses what the world considers foolish and weak to accomplish His purposes, ensuring no one can boast in His presence. The Sabbath principle woven throughout isn't merely about rest—it's about demonstrating trust that God will provide even when we stop striving. When we keep our eyes fixed on the Lamb, as Revelation 5 beautifully portrays, we find unity, purpose, and the ability to walk in the supernatural authority Christ has given us.
