In today's study, we encounter a powerful reminder that we were never meant to carry the weight of our calling alone. Through Exodus 18, we witness Moses being counseled by his father-in-law Jethro about the danger of trying to do everything himself. The message is clear: what we're doing may seem noble, but if we're doing it alone, it's not good. This isn't just about delegation or practical ministry management; it's about recognizing that God places people around us strategically for our protection, provision, and growth. We see this theme continue through David's story in 1 Samuel 19, where God surrounds him with protectors like Jonathan and Michal, and ultimately leads him to seek refuge with the prophet Samuel. The overwhelming presence of God was so powerful in that place that even those sent to harm David were overtaken by the Spirit and began prophesying. These accounts challenge us to ask: Are we recognizing the Jethros in our lives? Are we humble enough to receive counsel? Are we noticing God's protective hand working through the people He's placed around us? The psalm and proverbs readings reinforce the importance of walking with integrity, keeping our hearts pure, and living in a culture of honor that values wisdom over independence. This is an invitation to examine whether we're trying to be self-sufficient in areas where God is calling us to community, accountability, and shared burden-bearing.
