What does it mean to find refuge, and what happens when the High Priest dies? In Numbers 35, we encounter the ancient cities of refuge, places where someone who had accidentally taken a life could flee for protection. But the deeper story here is not about ancient Israelite law. It is about us. The manslayer could only return to his land and his inheritance after the death of the High Priest. That detail is not incidental. It is prophetic. When we place Jesus as the ultimate High Priest over that passage, the entire chapter transforms into a portrait of the gospel. His death is what releases us back into the promises of God. No ransom could substitute for the blood of the High Priest, and no effort of our own is sufficient to earn our way back into what God has prepared for us. The blood of Jesus is what cleanses the land, restores the inheritance, and opens the door for us to walk back into everything God has spoken over our lives. If we have drifted, grown cold, or feel disqualified by our past, this passage is a direct invitation. The High Priest has died. The way back is open. We can return to the land of our possession.
