Episode 100: WHAT IS DISCIPLESHIP?

Aug 31, 2026    Ron Tolson, Phillip Delgado

What does it truly mean to follow Jesus, and how is that different from simply believing in Him? That question sits at the heart of this milestone conversation, and the answer might challenge us more than we expect. Believing is the starting point, but discipleship is the journey that follows, and it is a journey that demands something real from us. Drawing on the moment in Matthew 14 when Peter steps out of the boat and walks on water, we are reminded that the moment we take our eyes off Jesus and fix them on the storm around us, we begin to sink. But the response to sinking is not shame, it is a cry for help. That cry, that reaching out, is itself an act of discipleship. The conversation walks us through what the characteristics of a genuine disciple actually look like in everyday life, from being rooted in Scripture and reading it in community, to bearing fruit that nourishes others rather than ourselves. A tree does not eat its own fruit. What grows in us through the pruning process of following Jesus is meant to feed the people around us. That reframing alone has the power to shift how we understand our own spiritual growth.
